How Our Woven Chair Is Made
In Malawi, Southern Africa, all our goods are manufactured by hand. No two goods will ever be exactly the same because they are produced one piece at a time from natural materials. These distinctive chairs have been made by professional craftsmen in Malawi since 1979. The lengthy procedure requires months of planning and a full 10 days of labour to complete just one chair.
The end result is a chair that is precisely handcrafted from wholly natural materials, strong, sturdy and beautifully elegant as well. It is the ideal fit for a bedroom, lounge, dining room and outdoor environment. You can be certain that each of your Malawi chairs is a one-of-a-kind beauty because each chair is handmade and absolutely unique.
These lovely chairs, a traditional African decorating staple produced entirely by hand in rural Malawi, showcase excellent weaving skills that have been passed down through the generations. Starting with a wooden frame carved from local blue gum trees, artisans insert strong bamboo strips into the frame which are braided into elaborate designs along the sides of the chairs, which is all done by hand. These strips are fastened by artisans using unique knots rather than glue. They temporarily install bicycle and car spare parts that serve as working tools to create a bent barrel back. Following a quality check, the chairs are imported to Cape Town, South Africa, completely assembled. The Malawi Chair is an iconic piece of hand-woven, 100% natural, Malawian cane.
This original piece of art will give any traditional or modern environment a touch of individuality. Each hand woven chair’s complex intricacies make for a great conversation piece and will upgrade your interior design space.
You will need to proactively clean and care for your furniture because our furniture is natural and organic. By doing this, you will be able to extend the life of the furniture and use it for many generations. Make sure the space where your Malawi Chair is located is sufficiently ventilated. Both indoor and outdoor use of the furniture is possible. Make sure to keep your furniture covered if you use it outdoors. If your furniture becomes wet, be sure to dry it off in the sun to prevent moisture build-up and mildew.
Because of the tight weave of our pieces due to the superior weaving, dust and dirt can accumulate within the weave of the furniture. Use a soft cloth or soft bristle brush to frequently dust your furniture. For a quick clean-up, you can also use your vacuum’s little brush attachment. Don’t forget to vacuum and dust the furniture’s underbelly as well. Mold will grow on the natural fiber as a result of dust or moisture accumulation.
The conventional style of Malawi Chairs is frequently what people picture when they think of them. This lovely handmade item will bring style to any space. Use it around your dining room table, as a decorative item or even as part of your outdoor living space. For additional comfort, pair it with one of our lovely cream cushions. You are directly supporting Malawian artisans and their families by purchasing these chairs.
